19th December 2008

Entries are now open for La Marmotte 2009. This year it's on Saturday 4th July. Voted number one European Sportive for 2008. Here's what cyclosport.org has to say about it:-

Location: Bourg d'Oisans, Isere, Alps, France

What can one say? The Daddy of them all, the Doyenne of Cyclosportives, this is the star in the calendar, the most difficult one day event for amateur road cyclists in Europe. The route (108 miles) traces a northerly course out from Le Bourg d'Oisans (the town at the bottom of lAlpe dHuez) running through Isere, Savoie and the Alps, climbing over mythical passes such as the Col de Glandon (1918m), the Col de Telegraphe (1570m), le Galibier (2642m), le Lautaret (2057m), and the famous 21 hairpins of the Alpe d'Huez (1880m) to the finish.   Not for the timid, it is a case of bon courage if you enter and chapeau if you finish. Anyone entering the elite of amateurs who have climbed 5000m in a day on a bike will be unlikely to forget the experience.

If you don't fancy the big one there is La Mi Marmotte which is 46 miles long, or on the Sunday a time trial up Alpe d'Huez.

Already we have 4 brave riders entered - Cliff Jackson, Nick Brown, Simon Wilson and Dave Hawkins, with many more expressing an interest. If you want to enter get your entry in quickly. Here is the link:-

Once we know the confirmed entries we can decide how we want to travel, where we stay, whether we take a day or two to see Le Tour etc.

5th November 2008

Winter rides will start from this Sunday at 9am and will go from the car park on the south side of the Cleddau Bridge. We decided to make a single and central meeting point to make it easy for people to know what's going on. Up until Xmas they will be relatively easy paced rides of 2 to 3 hours. After Xmas we will hopefully pick up the pace a bit ready for the reliability rides at the end of February. If enough people turn up we should be able to split into different paced groups.

8th October 2008

The minutes of the club AGM are now available in the publications section.

25th September 2008

The awards night for the Inter-club Championship is on Friday 3rd October at the Boars Head in Templeton. We have arranged for a finger buffet at £6 per head (vegetarian option provided) and I need to know final numbers by Tuesday 30th at the latest. Please e mail me at nabrown@totalise.co.uk.

22nd September 2008

Many apologies to Paul Colman who was wrongly robbed of his veteran mens 50 record due to a mistake on the website records page and an over zealous web master. He has now been reinstated in his rightful spot at the top of the list. If anyone has noticed any other mistakes (deliberate or otherwise) please let me know.

17th September 2008

The club AGM will be on 24th September at 7pm at St Florence Village Hall. If anyone would like to raise points for discussion they need to be put on the agenda in advance of the meeting.

14th September 2008

At the Cardiff Byways 50 today Cliff Jackson and Nick Brown both went faster than the Velo veteran 50 record time but it was Nick with a 2.02.54 who just edged out Cliff (2.05.55) to become the new record holder.

6th September 2008

Congratulations to George Scott who has won this years handicap competition. He snatched victory from long time leader Pete Lloyd in the last race of the season. Pete finished 2nd and Cliff Jackson was 3rd. The full results can be found in the results section.

1st September 2008

Congratulations to Cliff Jackson who completed the Welsh 12 championship yesterday with an excellent distance of 255.547 miles! That's an average speed of 21.3mph! He finished a creditable 8th overall but narrowly lost out in the Vet Group B championship. This is also a new club veteran mens record. Well done Cliff!

Also riding in Velos colours yesterday were our intrepid tandem riders Mark Jones and Mike George. They completed an excellent distance of 207.361 miles. Very well done lads!

25th August 2008

The club open weekend has passed off successfully thanks once again to the great efforts of Cliff Jackson.  Also a big thank-you to all of the marshalls and helpers, including Chris and her daughter on the teas, cakes and bacon butties, Andrea, Albert, Jill, Mel, Matt, Rich and I'm bound to have forgotten someone.

Well done to all of the winners, particluarly our up-and-coming junior riders who braved the wind and rain.  Cwmcarn Paragon may have gone home considerably richer but at least some of the money has stayed in Pembrokeshire this year. Full results will be published here soon.

24th August 2008

For everyone who has been wondering where my current good form has come from, here is a photo from my recent secret traing camp in Portugal. The spicy sausage definately makes you go faster!

10th August 2008

Congratulations to Cliff Jackson who set a new veterans club record of 4.16.51 on the R100/8 today.

Congratulations also to Nick Brown who set a new veterans club record of 21.51 on the R10/7 on 2nd August. He is also the Welsh Championship vet group winner for the 50 to 55 age group.

6th August 2008

Results from tonights time trial are now on the results page or available here Inter club challenge results 3 (now in PDF format).

The Tri Club came storming through at the end to snatch a dramatic victory. Only right and proper really as team captain Mark Jones has donated a trophy and has also offered to buy everyone a drink at the prize giving if the Tri Club won! (I heard him and I'm sure I could find witnesses). Congratulations to Tenby Aces with an excellent second place. The early leaders, Pembs Velo, crumbled under the pressure of superior numbers and were third.

Very well done to all that took part, it was a great turnout. I don't think a club night has ever had so many riders. Thanks to the marshalls who did really well under a lot of pressure. I will definately be buying them a drink at the prizegiving night. I will also buy Albert a new stop watch.

1st August 2008

Congratulations to Cliff Jackson who is British Veteran Mens Age Group Champion for the 100 mile time trial. His time of 4.33.23 on the R100/1 on 20 July was enough to see off the opposition.  He kept this very quiet didn't he!

31st July 2008

The clubs Open Weekend is just over 3 weeks away and now is the time to get your entries in. You need to enter using the CTTC Entry Form and get it to Cliff Jackson at 39 Whitehall Drive, Pembroke at least 2 weeks before the event. The events consist of a 10 mile time trial, 15 mile time trial and hill climb. You can enter one or all of the events. The cost is £6.50 per event but there are generous prizes. If you don't want to race we are always looking for marshalls and helpers.

29th July 2008

The final inter club challenge is going to be at Neyland on 6th August. We need a good turnout to make sure we stay at the top of the tree. Don't be shy, even if you come stone last you will still score points for the club, and by taking part you will qualify for free entry to the prize giving night (date to be agreed)! If you can't ride we need officials for time keeping, pushing off etc (also qualifies for free entry to prize giving night and maybe a drink on me).

23rd July 2008

The second inter club challenge took place tonight. An excellent turnout from all teams including a large number of first time time triallists and also some 'blasts from the past'. Well done to everyone who took part. Thanks very much to the marshalls who did a great job in the face of adversity. It was particularly good to see Roger Devonald, even if he was riding the wrong sort of bike. Let's hope we can inspire him to make a come-back on a proper bike!

The results can be found here:-

Inter club challenge results 1

Inter club challenge results 2

I haven't had any comments on tonights ride yet so I've assumed that the results are correct, so here are the points totals after 2 events.

Tenby Aces - 142 points

Pembs Tri Club - 148 points

Pembs Velo - 153 points

Still close enough to be anyones trophy. The next and final event is still to be confirmed.

20th July 2008

Yesterday saw 5 Velos taking part in the Cardiff 100 Mile Road Club's 25 mile time trial on the Usk course. This course is supposed to be one of the fastest in Wales, but a stiff NW crosswind made it quite hard in places. Never-the-less there were 4 out of 5 riders doing PB's. Tanis Hand with a 1.08.10 broke the Velo veteran ladies record by over 10 minutes. Well done Tan!  Gareth Rees, Cliff Jackson and Nick Brown also had good rides with Zippy (Cliff) doing a 57.18 to edge out Nick (57.21) by 3 seconds. With Pete Lloyd at 59.16 the Velo team were third overall.

16th July 2008

The Velo hosted Pembrey Crit last Tuesday evening was well attended by Velo members with 7 making the trip. Unfortunately none could get into the points but for some of the first-timers did well to finish in the bunch. Patrick Martin crashed at the finished but suffered just some cuts and bruises.
